What ingredients are used in this recipe?

  • Cocoa Powder, any dutch processed cocoa powder will work. Always sift your cocoa before using it, as it is known to get clumpy. Any those clumps are very hard to get out once mixed with other ingredients.

  • Powdered Sugar, if you are using powdered sugar that is labeled 10x on the package, there is no need to sift it. 10x means it has been ground 10 times and is already completely smooth. But if you want to sift it, go for it, it won’t do any harm to your recipe.

  • Unsalted butter, unless stated otherwise always use unsalted butter, especially when baking. You want to be able to control the amount of salt you are adding to a recipe.

  • Milk, I usually use whole milk, but have used half and half also and it works just fine. Non dairy milks may alter the flavor of this buttercream.

  • Dark Chocolate, the higher the quality of chocolate you use, the better the taste.

  • Salt, just a little pinch to balance the sweetness and enhance the chocolate flavor.

What can you use this frosting on?

  • Brownies, the perfect topping for these fudgy brownies, makes the ultimate chocolate lovers dessert.

  • Cookie sandwiches, make your favorite cookie recipe and use this frosting as a filling to sandwich two cookies together.

  • Cake and cupcakes, you can fill and frost a layer cake. Vanilla cake and chocolate frosting is always a classic combo.

  • Rice crispy treats, spread some on top next time, and throw some rainbow sprinkles, or m&m’s for a fun kid dessert

How to store this frosting?

If using right away, this frosting does not need to be refrigerated.

If making ahead of time, it is best kept in the fridge or freezer. It will last in the fridge for 2-3 weeks, and in the freezer for 6-8 weeks.

Before using, let frosting come to room temperature, and in a mixer, beat the frosting until smooth and creamy again.
